Although I cant find it now, I recall reading that the average car now does 0-60 in 8.3 seconds. The Model J does it in 8.0

Most cars at the time couldn’t even do 60 at all, this was a sonic boom with a top speed of 140 if supercharged.

I can only imagine how this thing must sound in full fury. I’ve been around a couple running at low speed, but nothing near fully lit.

I’m imagining something like the ominous deep howl of strong wind against a house.

One of the few prewar cars that can easily drive in the left lane of the superhighway without breaking a sweat.

Add in the smooth ride and the proto-ABS, and you could theoretically drive one every day in modern traffic, assuming you were in a warm, salt-free climate and rich enough not to care if it got damaged. So, if you were Jay Leno.

I don’t think there are really any modern cars today that represent such a massive leap over the performance of the average family car of the day - even the Veyron is still closer to a Camry than a Model J was to a Model A (actually, the Model T was still being built while the Model J design was under development).

This was possibly the last time that an American manufacturer could truely claim to have the best luxury car in the world by every conceivable metric, at least maybe until Tesla came along.
